Dana Roman - Artist Statement

Visual Poetry

Dana has a master’s degree in architecture from Prague, Czech Republic. She worked for ten years in architectural firms in Prague and Toronto before switching to art.

Dana also took the art courses at Ontario College of Art, Alberta College of Art, Vancouver Island School of Art, and a textile tour to Japan.
Dana won many awards for her art locally, nationally and internationally. One of the local public art awards is the triptych which hangs in the Canmore Town Hall at the Council Chamber.

In Canmore, Dana is known as an enthusiastic volunteer, the past president of the Canmore Art Guild, and a few times CAG Gallery Director. She served on juries in Alberta for multiple public art competitions. In 2011 Dana was the recipient of the Canmore Mayor’s Spotlight on the Arts Award.

Dana works in acrylics, mixed media, and textiles. Since moving to Canmore in 1997, Dana has had many solo exhibitions and participated in over 100 juried group exhibitions. Dana is an active member of the Alberta Society of Artists, Alberta Craft Council, Crafts Ontario and Canmore Art Guild.

Dana believes the paintings should be visual poetry, felt with our hearts rather than our brain. In her art, Dana prefers to express emotions rather than things. She spends most of her free time somewhere high up in the mountains, where she soaks up the experiences and the visual images and later transfers them into her art pieces.
